How do I choose the right property agent?

There are many decent and professional property agents in Spain. The problem, of course, lies in distinguishing them from the large number of unprofessional, incompetent or unscrupulous ones.

Shall I buy off-plan or re-sale?

The decision can in many cases be difficult to make, as prices often do not differ significantly from each other. Instead, in each situation, it often depends on one’s feeling when it comes to location, area and, not least, interior design.

How do I choose the right lawyer?

In Spain it is very simple, you are either a Lawyer (Abogado) or you are not. There is no in-between. Always ask the person you are dealing with for their Law Society’s number and verify they are registered to practice. If the individual refuses to give you his practising number, walk away.

How do I open a bank account?

When you buy a home in Spain, you must open a Spanish bank account. It’s necessary for payment of utility bills, and it makes economic sense as well.

What is a NIE number?

N.I.E. is an abbreviation for Número de Identidad de Extranjero, which translates as Identification Number for Foreigners. The NIE is your all-purpose identification and tax number in Spain. You need it for everything that involves a tramite or official process in Spain. 

How do I find an insurance broker?

The Spanish word for insurance is seguros. Insurance in Spain is a massively important subject – as a foreigner in Spain it is more likely that things can go wrong and that you could end up in situations you do not fully understand.
